These are the different styles of OEM Jeep 4.0L and/or 2.5L Oil Filter adapters. They had a few different styles and ways to use these as I will explain per unit. These were used to have adequate room for the oil filter not to hit the frame or engine mounts.
If you are going to be changing this, as far as I know, any "kit" you buy for ALL the O-rings to refresh these, NONE of them come with all of the ones you would need for any style. I have ordered the Fel-Pro kits and broke them down along with adding 1/2 o-rings to each kit to make sure you get ALL the proper O-rings you would need for your job!
First Style is the most common from 1993-2001, depending on which model Jeep you have, But this is the more up to date version which take the common standard thread oil filters. It uses the Torx-60 bit sized bolt to bolt to the engine block. This one CAN be clocked/degreed in any direction with the removal of the dowel pin. Comes with the alumiumn adapater and the bolt needed to bolt to the engine. #53020080 04883025 33002787 Uses Fram PH16 Oil Filter.
Second Style is the original 1987-1992 with the filter being mounted upside down, they made these in Renix models 1987-1990 which took a metric filter, and these changed in 1991-1992 to the standard threaded oil filter. I would personally recommend changing to the other newer style regardless which year block you are using for the. 1991-1992 Uses a Fram PH16 and the 1987-1990 uses a Fram FP3985
Third is JUST the Adapter, This DOES screw straight into the side of the Engine Block where you can just screw an oil filter directly to the engine. You will read that people are doing this in a factory jeep with a shorter filter, but I do NOT recommend doing this as the oil filter can get a hole knocked in it if the engine shifts around. You could use this in a custom application if the adapter was not needed. This will fit ALL 4.0 and possibly 4.2 engine blocks using the Fram PH16 or common Chrysler filter
