- The Jeep 2.5L Four Cylinder Piston Problem Is Real — DeXJs offers NEW replacement pistons pre-assembled on connecting rods to help eliminate one of the most common failures we see in these engines.
- These will most likely be out of stock, I prefer to do the four cylinders pistons as the service to keep from busting up sets of rods for the 4.0L engines. CLICK HERE for the service to change your old pistons out with new ones. This Method IS Cheaper!
- After years of buying, tearing down, and rebuilding Jeep engines, DeXJs has seen firsthand how these factory pistons can become a major problem. Cracked pistons, broken piston skirts, excessive piston slap, and wrist-pin noise are issues we regularly encounter when dealing with these engines.
-The problem is that replacing a failed engine with another used 2.5L can simply put the same problem back in your Jeep. A used engine may run great today, but if it still has the original pistons, you may only be buying time before the same issue appears again.
- That's why we started offering NEW replacement pistons pre-assembled on quality connecting rods — giving you a way to replace the problematic factory pistons before they fail, without having to hunt down and rebuild an entire used engine.
YOUR PURCHASE INCLUDES:
• 4 NEW replacement pistons
• Complete set of NEW piston rings - NOT INSTALLED
• Your choice of 544, 691, or 548 connecting rods
• Pistons installed on connecting rods
• Ready for installation
— ALL 3 CASTINGS ARE FULLY INTERCHANGEABLE
544 CASTING ROD
Commonly found in 1987–1995 Jeep 4.0L engines. These rods are typically associated with the earlier 4.0L engines that used the original-style pistons. While you may not have 544 rods in your engine, 544 casting rods will work in any 1987–2006 Jeep 4.0L application.
The 544, 691, and 548 rods are interchangeable, so there is no need to match the casting number that originally came out of your engine.
691 CASTING ROD
Commonly found in 1996–1999/2001 Jeep 4.0L & 2.5L engines before and during the transition to the later AB-block design. The 691 is essentially another version of the same 4.0L connecting rod, with a different casting number and slightly different shape.
691 casting rods will work in any 1987–2006 Jeep 4.0L & 2.5L engine, regardless of which casting number your engine originally had.
548 CASTING ROD
Commonly found in the later 1999/2000–2006 Jeep 4.0L & 2.5L engines, including the AB-block engines and the later coil-pack cylinder-head applications. This is the later-style casting, but it is still completely interchangeable with the 544 and 691 rods.
If your engine originally came with 548 rods, you can use 544 or 691 rods instead with no compatibility issues. I have personally made these casting changes in 4.0L & 2.5L engines many times.

Cores received after 180 days:

There is no expiration on the $15 per rod Core Credit after 180 days. We'd rather get your rods back later than never get them back at all!
THIS IS A CASH REFUND — NOT STORE CREDIT
Your Core Credit is refunded back to the original payment method used for your purchase after your returned rods have been received and inspected.
This is NOT store credit, a coupon, or credit toward a future purchase. You get your money back.
You do not have to return all six rods at once. Core Credit is issued for each usable connecting rod that is returned and accepted.
HOW THE CORE PROGRAM WORKS
- Purchase your new piston and connecting rod assemblies.
- Remove the original connecting rods from your Jeep engine.
- Keep each rod and its original rod cap together.
- Pack your usable OEM rods and return them to DeXJs using the return label provided with your purchase.
- We inspect the returned rods and issue your Core Credit refund based on the number of usable rods returned and when we receive them.
The sooner you return your cores, the more money you get back!
IMPORTANT — KEEP YOUR ROD CAPS MATCHED!
DO NOT MIX UP YOUR ROD CAPS!
Each rod cap must remain with the exact connecting rod it came from and in its original factory position.
If rod caps are mixed between rods, we cannot safely reuse those rods in our program and no Core Credit will be issued for those rods.
WHAT WE ACCEPT AS A CORE
We are looking for usable OEM Jeep 4.0L & 2.5L connecting rods from 1987–2006 engines.
The 544, 691, and 548 casting rods are all interchangeable for the 4.0L applications we offer. The casting number of your original rods does not have to match the rods you receive from us.
All returned rods are inspected by DeXJs before Core Credit is issued. Rods that are damaged or otherwise unsuitable for reuse may not qualify for Core Credit.
WHY WE PAY FOR YOUR CORES
WE WANT THE CORES BACK!
Good OEM Jeep 4.0L & 2.5L connecting rods are becoming harder to find. Your returned rods help us keep these NEW replacement piston assemblies available for the next Jeep owner who needs them.
Instead of letting your old rods sit on a shelf or go to the scrap pile, send them back to DeXJs and get your money back!
BUY → INSTALL → RETURN YOUR CORES → GET MONEY BACK
- DON'T WANT TO DEAL WITH CORES? SEND US YOUR RODS!
Already have your engine apart and your connecting rods removed? We can install the NEW replacement pistons on your rods for you!
If you would rather send us your original connecting rods and old/bad pistons, you can use our professional piston installation service and avoid the connecting rod Core Credit amount altogether. We'll install the new pistons and rings on your rods and send the completed assemblies back to you.
Typical turnaround time is approximately 2 weeks from the time we receive your rods.

IMPORTANT BEFORE ORDERING
If you have questions about whether your 4.0L or 2.5L engine block is cracked or damaged, we strongly recommend tearing the engine down and inspecting the block before purchasing a new piston set.
Piston and connecting rod assemblies are non-returnable and non-refundable. Please make sure you have verified that your engine is suitable for rebuilding before ordering.
If your rods are already removed, our piston installation service is a great option. Send us your rods and we'll take care of installing the NEW pistons and rings for you.
- ADD KING ROD BEARINGS & CHECK YOUR BEARING CLEARANCE
If you're replacing your 4.0L or 2.5L pistons, this is the perfect time to replace the rod bearings while you're in the engine. We now offer KING brand rod bearings — a high-quality bearing option at a great price for your engine rebuild.
For just a few extra dollars, we also offer Plastigage for checking your actual rod bearing clearance during assembly. Don't simply assume the bearings are correct because the parts look right. Checking your clearance during assembly can help identify problems before the engine is put back together and help ensure the proper clearance for long engine life.
NEW PISTONS + NEW RINGS + GOOD ROD BEARINGS + PROPERLY CHECKED CLEARANCES = A MUCH BETTER START FOR YOUR 4.0L REBUILD.

- If you're replacing your original pistons without boring the block, you most likely need our standard-bore pistons.
Looking for oversized pistons? See the bottom of this listing.
- OPTIONAL SHIPPING PROTECTION
Protect your investment!
Our piston and connecting rod assemblies are high-value, heavy engine components. For $10, you can add shipping protection covering your shipment for up to $650 in the event of loss or damage during transit.
Standard carrier coverage is limited to $100, so we highly recommend adding the $10 protection to your piston assembly order.
WHAT'S COVERED
This optional protection is intended to cover your piston and connecting rod assemblies if your shipment is lost or damaged while in transit with the shipping carrier, subject to the carrier's applicable terms and claim requirements.
IMPORTANT
Once your package has been accepted by the shipping carrier, the shipment is in the carrier's possession. If a package is lost or damaged during transit, the customer is responsible for submitting the required claim with the carrier.
For a $500+ engine component, we strongly recommend the additional $10 protection.
PLEASE NOTE
This $10 shipping protection is ONLY for orders containing eligible piston/connecting rod assemblies. Do not purchase shipping protection by itself.
-IMPORTANT — PLEASE READ BEFORE ORDERING
Please make sure your engine is suitable for rebuilding before purchasing. If your engine has experienced a broken or cracked piston, we strongly recommend completely tearing the engine down and inspecting the block, cylinders, crankshaft, connecting rods, and other components before ordering your piston assembly.
A piston failure can cause damage beyond the piston itself. We cannot determine the condition of your engine block or other internal engine components from the information provided with an order.
These piston and connecting rod assemblies are built for Jeep 2.5L inline-Four Cylinder applications from 1987–2006. Please verify that your engine and application are correct before ordering.
Piston and connecting rod assemblies are non-returnable and non-refundable. This does not affect the separate Core Credit program described above. Eligible returned cores will receive the applicable Core Credit refund according to the Core Credit terms.
